John W. Carter, M.D.
Dr. Carter has lived nearly all his life in central Indiana. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Earlham College, taught public school music, started the Carmel Symphony Orchestra, and sang several seasons with the Indianapolis Opera Chorus. He received a Master of Divinity degree from Earlham School of Religion, spent the next 10 years in pastoral ministry, and remains a recorded (ordained) minister in the Friends (Quaker) Church. Feeling led to enter the medical field to be able to address physical as well as spiritual issues, and following the required pre-med courses, Dr Carter was admitted to Indiana University School of Medicine, where he earned a doctor of Medicine degree. His residency training was done at Community Hospital East in Indianapolis.
Dr. Carter is board-certified in Family Medicine, a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and is a Diplomat of the American Board of Family Medicine. He is an Affiliate member of the IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital Medical Staff. He enjoys Family Medicine because it enables him and his staff to provide high quality compassionate care encompassing the full spectrum of life, from newborns to centenarians.
Albany Family Medicine, Dr. Carter's private-practice office, is located in Albany, Indiana, where he treats a wide variety conditions, including diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypothyroidism, and hypertension, to name a few, and performs minor in-office procedures, such as laceration repair, basic wound care, and skin lesion removal and biopsy.
